Hardies ushered in the winter collection with a fashion show on the premises of Hmiss at Javastraat 49 on Saturday 17 September. Not only creations from famous fashion houses received applause but also Hardies own couture collection.
Photos: Faycel Ahmed This will be the last show for Hardie Genscher, for many years the face of Hardies in partnership with Aad Vermeulen. Both have been gradually handing over the reins to the younger generation: Theo Wassink and Faycel Ahmed. Theo will take over the running of Hardies and purchasing and Faycel, who studied at the Hogere Hotelschool, will be responsible for management, communication and finances.
Thirty years in the fashion & couture business Hardies has been in Javastraat (corner of Frederikstraat) since 1982. Hmiss and the new Outlet shop came later and are located on the opposite corner. “From the outset a close relationship was built up with other fashion houses like Escada, Rena Lange and many others. Hardies quickly became a watchword and trendsetter in fashion circles, especially as a consequence of their themed fashion gala events in the Nieuwe Kerk and, later, the Grote Kerk”, says Faycel. Many prominent figures still figure among their clientele. Hardies Menshop was also a great success. The business was taken over by Andres in 2005 and renamed Via Andres and relocated in Frederikstraat. Open House twice a year The large-scale galas are now a thing of the past. Nowadays the choice is for a more personal touch during an Open House held twice a year featuring the new collection accompanied by hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Hardies is rejuvenating itself but, as they themselves say, without loosing sight of the fashionable, more mature woman. Collections catering for all women from designers like Valentino, Natan, Luisa Spagnoli and Michael Kors have now been added to the range. One of the newest top brands is Graciela Naum, the famous Argentine fashion designer (favourite of Princess Maxima). Hardies also offers a selection of bags, shoes and accessories to complete every outfit. After years designing couture clothing for just a few clients, Hardies is now presenting a complete collection made in their own atelier. There are three themes: plaid, fabric mix (combinations of the finest fabrics) and leather.
In the Outlet section attached to Hmiss clothing from the previous season is on sale at less than half the original price. Expert advice Hardies and Hmiss have a wide clothing range, catering to all sizes and tastes. Although it is a Residentie business through and through, only 20% of the clientele actually come from The Hague. Hardies’ expertise, good service and high quality and the team of seven advisers and two fitters are known far and wide. Clients from further afield often come for a ‘day out at Hardies’. Faycel says, “We were so surprised when Hardies was voted most welcoming shop by the shopping public in February 2010 and presented with the award by former alderman Frits Huffnagel. Everyone is most welcome at Hardies so don’t be backward in stepping over the threshold into our shop.” Hardies and Hmiss Javastraat 45 & 49 070 360 77 95 MW, September 2011 | ||

27 October - 8 November During the recent A&W Community Council meeting held on 29 September, the manager of Albert Heijn supermarket (AH) in Sumatrastraat, Sasja de Ruijter, made it known that the shop will – after all close – during the final phase of the renovation and extension work for 13 days from 5 pm on Thursday 27 October through Tuesday 8 November. On Wednesday 9 November there will be reception at 12 noon to which everyone is invited so that AH staff can show off the new store before the festive reopening at 1 pm.
In the meantime A&W Residents Association’s board member Auke Bloembergen will be having talks with AH on 13 October to discuss the arrangements for bike racks, location of shopping trolleys, containers, empty packaging and deliveries, which all have an impact on the public space outside the supermarket. Hopefully the A&W digital billboard will also be found a better and more viewable spot so that everyone can keep up to date with what’s going on in the neighbourhood whilst doing their shopping. For more information (before the final conversion phase starts): 070 355 57 38 During the temporary closure e-mails can be sent to sasja-de.ruijter@ahold.com Other Albert Heijn supermarkets not too far way: Laan van Meerdervoort 52 Elandstraat 160

Only just open but lots to do. Cobbler Ron Lauwers is busy and very glad of it. The pile of shoes and boots waiting for repair make it clear just how many customers have already crossed the threshold of the newly out-fitted shop in Javastraat. Clear too that there is a need for a good shoe repair service in the district.
Ready when you want That’s Lauwers’ motto. He wants people to feel at ease, while they are waiting on quick repair job, hence the comfy chairs and the coffee machine. He feels the homey atmosphere fits in well the neighbourhood, especially Mallemolen round the corner.
Lauwers worked in Javastraat from 1985 till 1990 for Aad Peters, the previous owner. Peters had reduced his services quite drastically in recent years and has now retired after 48 years in the business. Lauwers works using traditional methods in combination with modern machinery, which makes all kinds of repairs possible, even to the latest designer shoes. The shop has an extensive range of products from shoe polish and creams to laces, zips, belts and umbrellas and also offers a key-cutting service. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday; more details when the website is up and running. An even healthier choice of fruit and vegetables at Exotenhof
The aim of ThankYouNature is to make the Netherlands a really healthy country, and this mission is fully supported by Exotenhof our local greengrocer on Bankastraat. Exotenhof has embarked on a pilot scheme together with 13 other specialist grocers, to introduce a new and healthy choice of fruit and vegetables.
“Products are usually mass produced. Yet it is the varieties grown on a smaller scale that have more flavour, contain more nutrients and are the healthier option”, says Exotenhof’s Dennis Starkenburg. Together with his father Dirk, Dennis followed a training course at ThankYouNature so that they would be in a better position to pass on invaluable advice and tips about the healthy nutrients contained in various fruits and vegetables, and how best to prepare them. The Starkenburg family are always on the lookout for products of the best possible quality for their assortment. “People are much more aware of the benefits of fresh products and nutrients than ever before, and this was the reason we joined this pilot project with ThankYouNature."
Westland producers initiative ThankYouNature is an initiative of producers in the Westland area, concerned about the fact that fruit and vegetables are expected to have an increasingly longer shelf life, for a relatively cheap price and are visually perfect (straight cucumbers for instance). They are always looking for better varieties and strains containing a higher percentage of nutrients without any genetic manipulation. Westland producers are convinced that consumers, more than ever before, are focussed on quality, freshness and healthier choices. With this in mind, together with a number of specialist grocers, they have launched this new label. Exotenhof is one of the specialist stores involved in the project. Not only do they offer the usual tasty array of fruit and vegetables like sweet peppers, tomatoes and potatoes, but an assortment of micro vegetables like tiny broccoli cress, the seed of which contains as many nutrients as a whole head of broccoli. The products are delivered once a week, and the Exotenhof team are ready to give you all kinds of information about the products and the recipes. Exotenhof, a family business for more than 25 years, has an enormous choice of all kinds of other fruit and vegetables of the very highest quality, ready-to-go products like prepared vegetables, fruit salads, freshly made fruit juices as well as Eastern and tropical products. Annette Polderman organized a three-day exhibition to mark her 25 years as a framemaker. 'I want to celebrate this anniversary with my clients and fellow residents’, she explains. Her shop at Bankastraat 85 was transformed into a mini gallery with artists Annemarie Terlage and Euf Lindenboom exhibiting their work on 30 September and 1 and 2 October 2011.
Ms. de Ruijter pointed out that during the period leading up to the temporary closure less fresh produce will be available in the supermarket to limit waste and during the actual closure customers will be able to make use of vouchers issued by AH to do their shopping via the online
After
the complete renovation in 2005, it is again time to extend Albert Heijn on Sumatrastraat,
providing customers with a more spacious store and a wider range of products.
Now that all the necessary building permits have been issued, work on transforming
the former residence of Frits van Laar (owner of van Laar paint and wallpaper
shop who died last year) and the café De Koning next door is scheduled
to begin on 15 February. The contractor will try to take into account as
much as possible that the work is taking place in the middle of a residential
area and keep inconvenience to a minimum.
6 October 2011 – The owners hope to be opening their new fishmonger shop 'Zee op Tafel' (ZOT) in Bankastraat on Tuesday 1 November.

on the season. It's grown according to regulations, using the bare minimum of
pesticides.” There is already a growing demand for “Thank You Nature”
products, which are individually labelled and come with accompanying recipes.
