Museum Mesdag – now called The Mesdag Collection – is open again After two years of rebuilding work, the former residence and private museum of Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje van Houten at 7F Laan van Meerdervoort, is open again to the public. The new name “The Mesdag Collection” was chosen to better reflect the fact that Mesdag was not only a painter and banker but also a great collector. His collection of master works from the French Barbizon School and The Hague School are now arranged in such a way to give a better overview than was previously the case. The English say “Less is more” and now that the walls are less crowded, each painting comes more to the forefront. Many of the paintings have been restored, putting them literally in a new light and the information accompanying each one adds to this. Enlarged photographs of Mesdag and his wife hang above the staircase and after looking around the collection, there is a lovely garden at the rear of the museum to wander around, with a view of the famous next-door neighbour: the Peace Palace. At the front of the museum, the public is welcome to pop in for a coffee or to the souvenir shop without any obligation to visit the collection.
