First A&W Self-Employed Network meeting well attended The first get together of the new A&W Self-Employed Network, conducted by Marion Toorenvliet and Stella Zerbo, was well attended. There were fourteen local entrepreneurs round the table in the Coachhuis on Raamweg on Thursday 13 October. The theme for the evening was 'How do I sell my product or service?' Two of the fourteen participants were internationals and those present included a Nordic sport events organizer and coach, a conflict prevention mediator, two sustainability experts, a parenting coach (recently featured in the June issue of the A&W community newspaper), a ceramic tiles specialist, a Sedona self-help coach, a photographer and a safari organizer! After initial introductions, the evening kicked off with a brainstorming session to come up with an A to Z of themes for future meetings. This threw up some interesting possibilities, Yin and Yan and the X-factor numbering among the more novel ideas. 'How do I sell my product or service?' Next came an in-depth analysis of one participant’s concerns about achieving continuity in selling her services. Everyone was very generous with their advice and tips, resulting in an extremely constructive interchange of ideas and expertise. More about cooperation rather than social networking It became clear during the evening that social networking is not all that it’s cracked up to be. What seems to prove more effective is actually pooling or referring on knowledge and expertise, in other words a cooperative structure. Some believed that this could have the potential in the long run to bring in larger, multi-disciplined assignments. It was altogether a very stimulating evening and an eye-opener to the amazing diversity amongst the self-employed in Archipel and Willemspark. But now it’s time for a change and on 1 June the salon moved to a stylish property dating from 1882 in Prinses Mariestraat (parallel with Mauritskade just before the bridge at the end Frederikstraat on the right). Photo: Karen Kommer
The ground floor premises are light and streamlined, complimenting the original 19th-century interior, and have been divided into different levels to create separate areas for the various activities: hair washing, cutting, colouring and courses and workshops. One-man business Jan Monster works alone and is both a ladies and a gentlemens hairdresser and has been in the business 27 years. He learned how to cut hair in Florence, his expertise in colouring hair at Daniel Gavin in London and cosmetology at Augusto and John in The Hague. Workshops Applying makeup requires the correct technique and colour choice. Jan will be starting cosmetology (the study and application of various beauty treatments, including haircare and makeup) courses and workshops. If you are interested contact him at the address or telephone number below. Quality Owner Jacqueline van der Bent is mad about clothes. She worked in the fashion trade and has an eye for a good price and good quality, attractive clothing. The collection is a combination of outlet designer labels, new items from the previous season and good quality secondhand clothes. “We live in a throw-away society. I think that’s a shame. Why not pass things on to someone else for a reasonable price.” The name of the store reflects her own taste: fashionable clothes with attitude. On Thursday evenings the store is open for those who are interested in selling items on to others. Articles can be purchased on line too, but be quick …there are usually just one or two available of each item.

Many changes have taken place since 1976 but the huge mirrors and the barre are just the same, and boys and girls, men and women from five-years old till well into their eighties continue to practice here.
A lot has happened over the years but new pupils continue to flock to Elsa Vreken’s Ballet School and the old ones content themselves with searching for themselves among the photos and exclaiming, “ Yes, there I am, I danced in that ballet.” Summary of article by Koos van Deursen A&W Community Newspaper February 2011 Source of photo | ||

25th anniversary Thijsse veterinary practice
Photo: Karen Kommer Adjoining the consulting room is a charming conservatory full of plants and flowers with comfortable chairs. “Owners can wait here while their pets are undergoing an operation. Also if a pet has to be put to sleep [euthanasia], it can be done here peacefully and quietly. Such a sad business should not take place in impersonal surroundings but in a tranquil and homely setting”, explains vet Thijsse. If it is difficult to visit the practice, due to illness or a handicap, the vet will make a house call; clients can also choose to have their pets put to sleep at home in familiar surroundings if they prefer. In the past large animals were also treated but now the “patients” are primarily smaller pets like cats and dogs as well as guinea pigs and birds. There was a time when ferrets and rats were “in”, a passing trend just like certain dog breeds suddenly become the rage.
Care for pets has intensified Stomach and digestive tract problems are the primary complaints among small pets. Although all kinds of allergies can also make pets sick. In the past there were far more cases involving flea allergies, but with all the modern products available today this has become less of a problem; these days it is house mites and food allergies, for which special diets can be prescribed. “In days gone by the practice was always busier in the summer months because of flea problems”, says Francois. “Afterwards the whole practice had to be 'de-fleaed'.” Nowadays pets are cared for more intensively. “Owners are more likely than ever before to take out health-care insurance for their animals”, according to vet Thijsse “Most dogs are overweight: exercise is just as important for animals. Eating habits can also be a problem. Some dogs demand attention by continually begging for food and appear to be programmed to do this.” Veterinary network The practice has been going for 60 years and Joek Thijsse took over from veterinary surgeon Greup in 1986. He lives above the “shop” which is very convenient. When an animal takes longer than normal to recover from the anaesthetic after an operation, this is no problem and can be easily checked on regularly. Vet Thijsse is part of a veterinary network that provides a service at weekends and at night. This usually involves caring for wounded or found animals, which are ferried by animal ambulance to an animal reception centre after treatment. A great advantage is that pets are often micro-chipped these days and can usually be quickly reunited with their owners. The network also provides an opportunity to discuss difficult cases and organizes refresher courses and lectures for the veterinaries.
Accept an animal for what it is An urgent appeal from vet Thijsse: people must accept animals for what they are. A dog is a dog and a cat is a cat. Pets need to have an annual check-up and receive the necessary vaccinations and de-worming treatment. Teeth are examined and tests for diabetes and kidney disease are also routinely carried out during such check-ups. These check-ups are just as important as the annual injections. Be aware too that a dog’s behaviour can be greatly improved by training and is an absolute must for puppies. There is a surgery every weekday (Monday - Friday) from 13.00 till 14.00 and for owners with full-time jobs an evening surgery on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 18.30 till 19.30. Consultation by appointment is also possible. Veterinary J.M.Thijsse Surinamestraat 54 2585 GK Den Haag Tel: 070-3460040 MW, January 2011

A precious metals smithing course for beginners at De Haagsche Edelsmederij starts on 20 September 2011. There is the choice of 10 consecutive lessons on Tuesday afternoons (1.30 pm - 4 pm) or on Tuesday evenings (
7.30 pm -10 pm).
Fifteen years ago Jan Monster opened the hairdressing salon Haarzaak (hair business) in Javastraat.
Recent collections
Thirty-five
years: a long time and a lot of photo albums. The early photos are already rather
faded. The little girls in leotards in one photo recently went to a performance
at the Rotterdam schouwburg; not as dancers but as mums accompanying their own
aspirant dancers, who were taking part in the “De moord in de kerststal”
(murder in the Christmas crib).
Pupils
from the ballet school perform in public on quite a regular basis. At the show
for Saint Nicholas in December at the Heleicon College in Riouwstraat and at the
fashion show of young designers’ hats and clothing in the Gemeentemuseum
for example.

January 2011 is a jubilee for veterinary Joek Thijsse: 25 years ago he took over
the practice in Surinamestraat from his predecessor! Every weekday since then,
together with his partner Francois and assistant Monique, he has devotedly cared
for the well being and health of our local pets.
