While renovating the blind wall of the property on the corner of Borneostraat and Madoerastraat, Hulsebosch Constructies noticed the faded letters from an earlier wall advertisement. Jac. G. July 2010 – Missed the bend but not the lights. But the pedestrian lights at the Javastraat/Nassauplein crossing keep signalling regardless.

Bird Cherry completely enveloped
Photo: Webteam

June 2010 – Just like in the countryside, some specimens of the Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) in our own gardens are completely enveloped in sticky white cobwebs at this time of year.

Back in the late 19th and early 20th century the Dutch naturalist and teacher Dr. Jac. P. Thijsse wrote about the plagues of caterpillars that sometimes infest these plants in one of the famous Verkade albums about nature (In de duinen: 1899). (With every roll of Verkade biscuits or chocolate customers received a picture card, which they could glue into albums.)

Thousands of caterpillars of the Bird-cherry Ermine Moth (Yponomeuta evonymella) make an extensive protective weblike nest allowing them to completely strip plants unhindered. Afterwards the plants usually recover and produce new leaves; you wait and see!

Coincidently, the original watercolours from the Verkade album entitled Blonde Duinen (1910) will be on display at the Zaans Museum until 4 August 2010.

International interest in World Cup

11 June 2010 - The World Cup starts today in South Africa. It looks like not only the Dutch have caught football fever, other representatives of the 32 participating nations are getting in the mood too.

In The Hague many streets, houses, restaurants and cafés will turn orange during the month of the World Cup. Not a problem but there are a few rules of the road! More ...

Council curtails Bankastraat metamorphosis
Photo: Google Earth

5 March 2009 – The city council agrees to changes at the top of Bankastraat and around Bankaplein. Opinions on proposals for the narrow section of Bankastraat still differ widely but reconciliation between the council and the initiative-takers cannot be ruled out. Transformation of the broad section of Bankastraat into a safe and pleasant gathering place for residents was better received. The whole neighbourhood will be involved during 2009 with the drawing up of the remodelling plans. They will be realized during the major revamp in 2010. More …
